Our Process
Want a behind-the-scenes look at how we make our handmade jewelry? Look no further! Every step is a testament to our passion for creating one-of-a-kind wearable art.
Step 1: Conditioning the Clay
Polymer clay is hard when first opened. We condition it by hand and then roll it through a manual pasta roller to achieve an even thickness, when desired.
Step 2: Color Mixing
We often mix colors to create custom shades. This means more conditioning and rolling (we’re sweating just thinking about it)!
Step 3: Adding Details
We place the rolled out clay onto a ceramic tile (so it doesn’t stick). If we want to add a texture, paint, or screenprint the clay, this is when we do it! Our more intricate pieces include detailing with small clay pieces, which are custom designed, rolled, cut, and molded by hand, then pressed onto the main slab of clay (Heidi’s favorite part)!
Step 4: Cutting
Next we cut the clay into shapes using clay cutters or a craft knife.
Step 5: Baking
Then they go on a cookie sheet in the oven to cure. During this part, we wish we were baking cookies.
Step 6: Sanding/Polishing
Once the pieces have cooled, we sand them down and use Acetone to smooth out bubbles and sharp edges. If paint was added, we add a wax polish to protect it.
Step 7: Designing
Sometimes we have a plan from the start—other times, the design comes together more organically when we see the baked, individual pieces.
Step 8: Drilling
We then mark where we want to put holes, look through a large magnifying glass, and drill the clay with a Dremel tool.
Step 9: Finishing
Lastly, we use jewelry tools to add jump rings, posts, and findings (accent pieces). Don’s favorite part, as he loves watching them come to life!
Step 10: You Wear It!
